Gus,

Funding for public institutions, including libraries, should be a national, state and local government priority- it is not though. This lack of valuing means that libraries will have to participate in consortia. I don't think this is a bad thing as long as a particular library's needs are being met.

I had never realized that consortia were so important, even for a big university like UH. I figured money was always there for spending, but I guess the ever increasing prices of publications make it impossible for even big universities to get everything they want. The great ting was that not every library does not have to spend equal amounts with places. This would still price a lot of resources out of the hands of small libraries. Overall, i think consortia are beneficial to everyone that goes to a library expecting all of their needs to be met.

I too was unfamiliar with the term "consortium" however was familiar with the concept of resource sharing. The whole notion of a consortium makes perfect sense for library systems who wish to offer quality and a certain quantity of resources. Especially in the light that library systems seem to operate in financially limited environments. Also, fundraising is important to library systems- somehow I think it shouldn't be that way but I know this is naive. I just think that library systems should be well funded by governments because they support democratic processes and personal development (which serves current and future communities).
